چکیده

The term “reactive arthritis” was first introducedby Aho et al. in 1973 for conditions following infection in other organs in which no microbial antigens could be isolated from the joint. Rheumatic fever, Reiter’s syndrome and postenteric reactive arthritis constitute the major clinical forms of the disease. A number of unrelated organisms have been implicated in association with the disease. These include bacteria viruses, protozoa, fungi and helminths 5. The protozoa constitute a rare cause of reactive arthritis. Those reported in association with the disease to produce arthritis and/or arthmlgia include Giardia lamblia, trypanosomes, plasmodia, trichomonas, Babesia microti, Blastocystis hominis and cry ptosporidium. We believe that amoebiasis has never been reported in association with reactive arthritis. Here we report a case of reactive arthritis following an amebic liver abscess.

Septic arthritis of the knee associated with calf abscess.

Septic arthritis associated with extra-articular abscess is rare. We report on 2 non-rheumatic patients with septic arthritis of the knee associated with calf abscess. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a distinct leakage pathway from the knee joint in each patient. One was a ruptured popliteal cyst (posteromedial). Another was a pathologic popliteus hiatus (posterolateral). These patients under...

Gastrointestinal Fistulization in Amebic Liver Abscess.

CASE CHARACTERISTICS We report two preschool children presenting with short history of pain, fever and right upper quadrant pain. The abscess communicated with gastro-intestinal tract (ascending colon in case 1 and duodenum in case 2), and diagnosis of amebic...

Peroxynitrite and Peroxiredoxin in the Pathogenesis of Experimental Amebic Liver Abscess

The molecular mechanisms by which Entamoeba histolytica causes amebic liver abscess (ALA) are still not fully understood. Amebic mechanisms of adherence and cytotoxic activity are pivotal for amebic survival but apparently do not directly cause liver abscess. Abundant evidence indicates that chronic inflammation (resulting from an inadequate immune response) is probably the main cause of ALA. R...

EVALUATION OF !FA, IHA AND BLA TESTS IN THE SEROLOGICAL DIAGNOSIS OF AMEBIC LIVER ABSCESS

As there was not any previous comprehensive study on the serological tests for hepatic amebiasis in Iran, the indirect hemagglutination (IHA), indirect fluorescent antibody (IF A), and biocolored latex agglutination (BLA) tests were evaluated in the serodiagnosis of amebic liver abscess(ALA). For this purpose a total of 165 serum samples 18 of which were obtained from patients known to have...
